Toilet Training Your Child: 3 Top Tips
Posted on: 25 November 2019
If your child is reaching the age where they are ready to make the transition from using a potty to using a toilet, you may be dreading toilet training them. However, while toilet training may prove to be challenging while your kid masters a new set of skills, it doesn't have to be a nightmare. Read on to discover 3 top tips which will make toilet training easier.
Don't rush
The most important thing to recognise is that you cannot rush toilet training. It is important that you progress at a pace which your child is comfortable with. If you attempt to rush things, it is likely to stress out your kid, which will make it hard for them to concentrate on learning the skills they need to use a grown-up toilet. It is good to introduce the concept of using the toilet in the weeks before you actually start training your child. For example, you could read them a children's book which tells a fun story about how to use the toilet. If your child already has an idea of what you want them to do, they are more likely to be successful when they attempt to use the toilet.
Provide rewards
Positive reinforcement can help to encourage your child to keep trying. It is unlikely that your child will instantly be able to use a toilet, so you should break down the process into steps. Once they have managed to sit on the toilet, you should reward this with a small treat such as a special dessert at dinner time. Every time your child manages to successfully go to the toilet, you should provide them with a small reward. You should also reward them when they have flushed the toilet and washed their hands. Rewards could include small toys or lollipops.
Invest in disposable toilet seat covers
During the process of learning to use a grown-up toilet, it is likely that your child will sometimes miss their mark. Placing a disposable toilet seat cover on the toilet makes cleaning up after accidents extremely easy as the absorbent seat cover will soak up and trap urine. Once your child has finished, you can simply remove and dispose of the seat cover and insert a new one ready for when your child is ready to go again. If you are interested in finding out more, you should contact a company which supplies disposable toilet seat covers for children.
